One Day Trip to Cuenca and the Enchanted City from Madrid

One Day Trip to Cuenca and the Enchanted City from Madrid

The visit begins its journey by bus to the Castilla La-Mancha region, where we will have time to go to the bathroom or have a quick coffee with a nice view of La Mancha landscape. We will make a stop at the Ventano del Diablo viewpoint, with spectacular views over the Júcar canyon. We will be able to observe vultures or Egyptian vultures, among other birds, flying over our heads.

Our first stop will be in a wine cellar for a short break before and continue to Ciudad Encantada. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a walking tour of this magical place. After an hour of travel, we will stop at this winery in La Mancha.

You do not expect to find high buildings or old monuments, because although the name can be misleading you, this site awaits to show you the wonders from Cuenca's environment. Júcar River flows between Uña and Villalba de la Sierra forming a huge impressive canyon. Here, at almost 1,500 m above sea level, Nature has created one of those whims that always fill the traveler with astonishment: The Enchanted City.

The Enchanted City is a natural place that was declared Natural Site of National Interest in 1929. Nowadays, it is included within the limits of the Natural Park of Serranía de Cuenca (PNSC) and declared as High-priority Protection Area by its exceptional geomorphological value of international interest.

The aroused amazement has caused that numerous filmmakers have found inspiration in this impressive filmmaking scenery, embellished by the silence of the mountain. A cinematic landscape in which renowned artists, such as Sophia Loren, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Oliver Stone or Arnold Schwarzenegger have been acting. The karstic landforms have generated here fanciful shapes on the rocks that surprise the visitor. These worldwide known geological phenomena are rock formations carved by ice and wind action. Under the water were hid vestiges from Jurassic, The Thetis Sea, a predecessor of the Mediterranean Sea. Footpaths invite you to wander around these particular rocky shapes that remind us of human figures, objects, animals, with an accuracy difficult to understand so that we get a delirious city that seems to be slept by some kind of mysterious spell.

Enjoy lunchtime! (Only if you selected the option "Tour with lunch" during the booking process, you will enjoy a typical lunch or a tourist lunch according your chosen option.)

Once the lunch is over, we will take a panoramic tour through the Huécar river sickle that will take us under the cliffs to the highest part of the city, El Barrio del Castillo. From here we will descend on foot visiting the most emblematic corners and monuments of the Medieval quarter of the city, until arriving at the Parador where the bus will pick us up again to return to Madrid. All accompanied by our expert local guide Upon arriving in Madrid.
