Start with a walk to stretch your legs in the tranquil and beautiful City Park which is home to Széchenyi Spa and Vajdahunyad Castle. At the edge of the park lies Heroes’ Square, grand and imposing and marking the beginning of the magnificent Andrássy Avenue. Tree-lined and dripping with opulent luxury the avenue is home to the famous and ornate National Opera House.
Driving on through the beautiful downtown area, you will reach the Synagogue of Dohány Street, the largest synagogue in Europe which also marks the border of the Budapest Ghetto. Afterwards, head to Saint Stephen's Basilica and to the Parliament. The Parliament building is iconic and often symbolic of the city.
Crossing over the bridge to the western or Buda side of the city, explore the castle district on foot including Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion. Admire the vistas at Gellért Hill where from atop the hill at the Citadel you can take in the panoramic views of the stunning city unrivalled by any other location.
Danube bend tour
Take an unforgettable tour into Hungary's history along the Blue Danube with excursion into Visegrád, Esztergom and Szentendre. These locations right on the river are picturesque and offer arts and crafts, historic points of interest and great views of the natural surrounds.
In Visegrád walk on the 750 year-old stones of the formal Royal Residence and learn about life in the middle ages while enjoying the fascinating panorama of the Danube valley. Known as the Northern gate of Budapest, the city of Esztergom is the centre of the Catholic Church. Here you can visit the largest cathedral of Hungary and then glance across the river to view Slovakia.
On the return to Budapest is the artist's village of Szentendre. A small baroque city at the gate of the Danube Bend, it is the meeting place of the river Danube and the Pilis mountains, and has a beautiful natural backdrop.
Walking around the baroque settlement, built on medieval ruins make your way through the narrow streets to a vantage point atop the city for great views of the Danube. Simply enjoy the special atmosphere of this village and should you wish, take the opportunity to visit the museums such as the world-famous Margit Kovács Ceramic Museum or the Confectionery Museum with buildings and people made of marzipan.
During the summer (between the 1st of May and the 30th of September) you return to Budapest by boat on the Danube.
