One Day Trip to Cuenca with Entrance to the Hanging Houses and the Cathedral

The visit begins its journey by bus to Castilla La Mancha region. After an hour of travel, we will stop at this winery in La Mancha, where we will have time to go to the bathroom or have a quick coffee with a nice view of La Mancha landscape. After we continue to Cuenca.

Upon arrival, visits to the Cathedral and Clerestory are included. The most impressive building in the city, Nuestra Señora de Gracia Cathedral, is the first gothic monument built in Spain by order of Alfonso VIII. His wife, Leonor de Aquitania y Plantagenet, whose brother was Richard the Lionheart, introduced the new Gothic style in the cathedral’s architecture. The building is considered the first gothic cathedral in Castile and was consecrated to Saint Mary in 1208. Inside the temple, light effects reflected through the stained glass lead the visitor into a mystical tour that goes from the twelfth century to the Baroque style period.

The Cathedral’s viewing is complemented by the striking view from the clerestory. A tiny spiral staircase leads the visitor up to the cathedral’s ceiling. You will be impressed by the amazing views of the cathedral from there, a singular spectacle that allows you to appreciate each detail and corner of this house of worship. From the heights, you will be surprised by the Main Square scene, where one can appreciate not only the historical city centre but also the panoramic view of the new city and the Jucar River’s meanders.

We will cross the Sickle of the Huécar River with our bus, passing under the Hanging Houses and the San Pablo Bridge until we reach the highest area of the city . Next stop will be the popular Hanging Houses and Museum of Abstract Art. The most well-known tourist attraction of the city are the Hanging Houses, an example of typical architecture in Cuenca, where the balconies invite you to simply observe the abyss. They have become the watchword and signal of the city. Inside the emblematic Hanging Houses we will find one of the most significant artistic exhibitions from the middle 20th century: The Museum of Abstract Art. This museum showcases hundreds of pictures and sculptures from the abstract generation of the fifties and the sixties, which continues, in a certain way, the innovative ideas of Picasso, Miró and Gris. One can enjoy Art works made by Canogar, Chillida, Feito, Millares, Oteiza, Tapies, Torner and Zóbel.

Then you can enjoy enough free time for lunch. (Only if you selected the option "Tour with lunch" during the booking process, you will enjoy a typical lunch or a tourist lunch according your chosen option.)

Once the lunch is over, we will take a panoramic tour through the Huécar river sickle that will take us under the cliffs to the highest part of the city, El Barrio del Castillo. From here we will descend on foot visiting the most emblematic corners and monuments of the Medieval quarter of the city, until arriving at the Parador where the bus will pick us up again to return to Madrid.
